6 Spring and Summer Closet Staples

Mom/Boyfriend Jeans

I know Gen Z is making a clear statement that skinny jeans are out. However, I promise this staple is not because of the new “suggestion.” We started dabbling in the mom/boyfriend jean arena last spring and both loved these pants. Last spring, we called out our favorite find in this category which were the American Eagle boyfriend jeans in the 'Current Favorites' post. American Eagle has a ton of cute options this year as well! It seems like a lot more stores are hopping on this trend because I am noticing a lot more options this year. I recently bought a pair of high rise mom jeans and mid-rise boyfriend jeans from Old Navy and another pair of mom jeans from Abercrombie. All three brands are affordable options with great quality. I personally love a good pair of mom or boyfriend jean because they are great for wearing more cropped shirts since they are so high waisted and flattering. I really like the look of body suits with this type of pant as well—two super simple pieces that make for a well put together outfit with little to no effort. The straight leg aspect of the pant also makes your shoe options more versatile. Platform sneakers, mules, sandals, and heels all work well with a straight leg pant. Although I’ll never stop wearing skinny jeans entirely, Gen Z is onto something with the mom/boyfriend jean trend.

Basic Body Suits

I absolutely love body suits; I would say this is my favorite staple piece for all seasons. However, body suits in the spring and summer are really convenient. I love how versatile they are—you can wear them with skirts, shorts or jeans. They are also the perfect piece for layering. I love wearing body suits under my denim and white jean jackets in the spring and summer, but they’re also great on their own. Pairing a simple body suit with a duster or cardigan in the spring is another great way to layer an outfit. I know a lot of people that shy away from body suits because most people associate them with being skintight. That is not the case! There are so many great brands that have flowy body suits that look like everyday tops or blouses but are body suits. These types of body suits are also great for work. I hate having to constantly tuck my shirt in or have the extra fabric bunch up in my pants—blouse body suits are my go-to when I’m in the office. I highly recommend taking a look at Abercrombie, Lulu’s, Zara, and even Amazon to stock up on some basic body suits.

Simple, Staple Shoe

My top three shoe categories for spring and summer are a simple sneaker, sandal, and dressy. Not that this is a trend specific to this season, but I love having a simple white sneaker for running around the city in—here are a pair of Steve Madden's that I love. It’s so easy to pair a white sneaker with a daytime outfit whether it is basic or on the dressier side. They work with all bottoms whether it’s a skirt, shorts, or boyfriend jeans. Another staple that I love for spring and summer is a super simple sandal with color. Basic sandals that have a pop of color are a super easy way to make a plain outfit pop. It also is a great way to subtly tie in accessories. I love these sandals from Lulus this season and bought similar one’s last year that I still love! Lastly, having a great wedge or platform sandal is a great way to dress up any spring or summer outfit. I typically stay in the neutrals with tan, camel, or brown when buying this type of shoe because it goes with everything. I absolutely love Target’s spring and summer shoe collection and have bought a new pair of these wedges every season for three years because I love them so much. I’m also obsessed with these wedges from Amazon. Having these three basics will have you covered for every style you pull together this spring and summer.

Bathing Suits

For anyone in the market for new bathing suits—now is the time to shop! There are so many cute suits out right now. I absolutely love all of Aerie’s new bathing suits. I haven’t shopped their swimwear in years and now I’m questioning why. Amazon also has great bathing suits; I buy all my basics and mix and match bathing suits from here. When shopping for swimwear, it’s really important to get styles you’re comfortable in! You don’t want to buy something that you don’t end up wearing because you don’t like the way it looks on you. I try to keep a variety of styles that I know I like on myself. There are just some beach days where I don’t feel comfortable in anything but a one piece, which is OKAY! I would definitely recommend having a few styles that you like so you have backups on days where one feels better than the other. I’ve been really into matching set this season. I normally don’t buy entire sets, instead I typically buy tops or bottoms I like separately and mix and match them. However, the options at Aerie are so cute this season that I had to buy the set! Here is my absolute favorite swimwear purchase so far this season.

Floral Pieces

I am seeing a ton of floral this season for spring or summer. I’m not sure if this is a known trend for the season, but I couldn’t help but notice this pattern at all my go to stores. Abercrombie has a ton of cute Midi skirts in floral patterns that I love. I’m typically not a skirt or floral person, but I bought a few of these this season and really like them. They also pair perfectly with my excessive collection of basic body suits. Another trend I’m noticing a lot are floral blouses. Nothing says spring/summer like a flowy, floral, pastel top. Abercrombie, Lulus, and even Target have really cute options in this department. I also really like smocked tops this season. I owned a few smocked shirts a few years back and never wore them because I was insecure with that tight and slightly cropped style on the area of my body I typically try to hide. However, the smocked tops this season are a lot more flowy. Luckily for us, with the mom/boyfriend jean being in style at the same time, they pair perfectly together. I hated the look of smocked tops with skinny jeans, however, a flowy smocked top with high waisted mom jeans is a style I am loving for this spring! Overall, having a pattern that you like really helps spice up your spring and summer wardrobe, and this year I am jumping on the floral train.

Accessories

I might be late to the headband trend; however, I am LOVING them lately. I have found so many cute ones at Target and Aerie that will be perfect for spring and summer. It’s such a classic and simple way to spice up any basic outfit. Headbands also do wonders for second day hair—making you look extremely put together and accessorized with little to no effort. Accessories are definitely where I am a little more adventurous with color and pattern and headbands are the perfect item to explore with because they’re super inexpensive. Another accessory that I still love for spring and summer are straw or woven bags and clutches. There are a ton of cute options out there now (other than the straw, circle cross body every girl owns). There are a ton of different shapes and textures, I am currently loving this cross body from Lulus. Spring and summer are the seasons to bring more color into your wardrobe, for those of us who are less adventurous with color in our wardrobe, accessories are a way to add pops of color to any look.
